Understanding GVM Upgrades
Understanding the theory behind GVM upgrades is essential for road safety and compliance with all relevant regulations. GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) is the maximum weight allowed for a vehicle when it is fully loaded. This is a figure that is specified by the original equipment manufacturer, of which the vehicle owner or driver is required by law to uphold. If you exceed this weight and have an accident, it is likely the insurance company won’t cover you. It is also very dangerous for the handling on the vehicle and fines are possible.
The load includes all the passengers and fuel, so combined with all the extra’s we now add to 4×4 vehicles, such as long-range fuel tanks, bull & tow bars, roof racks, winches and recovery gear, it’s easy to exceed the GVM. IMPORTANT: For in service/post registration vehicles (State Compliance), Queensland, WA and NT no longer recognise a revised GCM over Original Equipment.
NSW, SA and VIC recognise a revised GCM and Towing Capacity Upgrade if endorsed by the inspecting engineering signatory.
WA and NT no longer allow Towing Capacity over Original Equipment.
Tasmania no longer recognise Towing Capacity Upgrades over Original Equipment, however they do recognise a revised GCM.
